St. George’s was founded by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG), one of whose stated purposes was “to bring the Anglican faith to the colonies’ slaves and Native Americans.” And, indeed, early church records and correspondence with the SPG show that infants born to enslaved people were baptized at St. George’s and that there were adult “negro communicants,” meaning that they were counted as members of the parish and, most importantly, were receiving Holy Communion.
